A note about “Glossy” surface fiber based papers

Often confusion arises when the term “glossy” is used to describe the surface of fiber based gelatin silver prints, in part due to the proliferation of Resin Coated (RC) papers. There are great differences between RC papers and fiber based materials however. RC glossy paper is the familiar standard for contact proofs, work prints, and machine prints. It’s surface is very shiny and feels rather plastic to the touch. The classic fiber based glossy surface is quite hard and while it reflects a certain shine, it does not have the hi-gloss plastic feel of RC material.

Fiber based glossy surfaces are often requested “air dried”. This is because at one time, fiber based papers were offered with a surface finish option, either air-dried or ferrotyped. Ferrotyping creates an ultra shiny surface on fiber based paper (similar to glossy RC paper) by allowing the fiber print surface to make contact with a heated surface during the drying period. Air drying allows the material to set with its natural finish as described above. Today, ferrotying is no longer an option and all glossy fiber papers are set in their natural finsh.

Toning

For fiber papers we offer selenium and gold toning baths for increased archival longevity without affecting the natural tone of the material. We also offer various bleach driven, redevelopment, and dye based color shift toning options including: split-selenuim, sepia, blue, brown, pink, red, etc. Please inquire directly regarding recommended paper and toner combinations.

Black + White Lith Printing

Lith prints are produced by processing conventional silver based fiber papers in dilute Lith developer. Lith developer was created to process extreme graphic results from conventional b+w film, a procedure rarely necessary in the digital age. Dilute lith printing, however, produces unique contrast and color results otherwise unobtainable with conventional processing and toning chemistry.
